Purple Jewel™

'Purple Jewel' Prunus virginiana.(Ornamental)

A sensational new selection. Much larger leaves than the usual form commence as green young new growth and then turn quickly to incredibly deep, shining, wine red, with gorgeous, soft, blue-mauve undersides. When the sun is behind them the sight is stunning! The display continues until late Autumn, the leaves remaining on the trees much longer than usual variety selections.

This is not a well known prunus but with its larger, more handsome leaves it should supersede other purple leafed prunus such as Prunus nigra and its cultivars.

As with most foliage trees, colours will be more dynamic in open, sunny aspects.

This variety has an erect growth habit and is a hardy tree that will withstand heavy frosts.

Trees reach a height of 5m  and a width of 4m when fully mature.

Not recommended for coastal QLD and Northern NSW due to the high rainfall.
